DHA’s decision to provide blue collar insurance coverage for mental health and alternative therapy is seen as a revolutionary move.

In a circular issued on July 7, the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) improved the essential benefits scheme for insurance buyers in Dubai. Two months from the date of publication of the circular, low-income workers whose salaries are less than Dh 4,000 will be able to benefit from hospital, outpatient and emergency coverage, up to Dh 10,000 per year, for psychiatric and mental health treatment – ambulatory patients entitled to 20 percent coinsurance. In addition, coverage worth Dh 2,500 per year will be available for alternative therapies, such as ayurveda and homeopathy, with a 20% coinsurance payable for outpatients.

The announcement was greeted as a progressive and much-needed step by medical professionals, insurance companies and mental health activists; for giving low-income workers access to facilities that were previously limited to high-end insurance plans.
