Insurance contract investigation underway at Central Florida Zoo – WFTV

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Florida – An investigation is underway at the Central Florida Zoo to see if an insurance contract has been properly awarded by the zoo’s board of directors.

It comes after board members raised red flags about a board member’s connection to the insurance agency that won the contract.

A working group was immediately struck to review the updated board policy regarding conflict of interest regarding the awarding of contracts to the Central Florida Zoo. This working group will also determine whether any wrongdoing has been committed by the board member in question.

To insure the Central Florida Zoo, it costs about $ 300,000 a year, a significant amount that comes from their $ 5 million budget.

However, the zoo board decided to cut its insurance to save money.

“With another well-known insurance agency here in town the change was made, it was supported by the board of directors,” said Bob Morrison, vice chairman of the board of directors at the Central Florida Zoo. .

Several board members, including Seminole County Commissioner Jay Zembower, have raised concerns about the tendering process.

While the insurance contract in question was in place, the board of directors put it out to tender.

Morrison said that despite COVID-19, the zoo, which has been in existence since 1975, is having a great year financially and attendance is on the rise. However, the working group will also review updated policies and procedures with respect to the tendering process.

Zembower also asked the county attorney to review how the CARES Act and American Rescue Plan funds the county has allocated to the zoo have been used to offset losses from COVID-19. Zembower said he wanted to make sure the funds were used correctly.
