COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCBD) – The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) confirmed Tuesday evening that an arrest has been made in connection with the shooting of Alex Murdaugh on September 4.

SLED says Murdaugh orchestrated the shooting, so that a beneficiary could collect a $ 10 million life insurance policy.

Murdaugh was shot in the head while changing a tire on a rural road in Hampton County.

Curtis Edward Smith (61) of Walterboro has been charged with assisted suicide, aggravated assault and battery, robbery and display of a firearm, insurance fraud and conspiracy to sight of committing insurance fraud.

According to SLED, Murdaugh gave the gun to Smith and ordered Smith to shoot him so his son could collect a $ 10 million life insurance policy.

“On September 13, 2021, Mr. Murdaugh made a statement to SLED, admitting that Mr. Smith murdered him in an attempt to allow his son to purchase a life insurance policy worth about ten millions of dollars.

The shooting came just days after Murdaugh resigned from his law firm over accusations of misallocating millions of dollars in funds, which Murdaugh pledged to repay the firm.

He also announced that he would be entering rehab for what his brother said was a drug problem.

Murdaugh openly apologized and said the recent murder of his wife and son had exacerbated his problems.

Lawyers for Alex Murdaugh released the following statement:

On September 4, it became clear that Alex believed that ending his own life was his only option. Today he knows that is not true. Over the past 20 years, many people have fueled her addiction to opioids. During this time, these people took advantage of her addiction and her ability to pay substantial sums for illegal drugs. One of these people took advantage of his mental illness and agreed to kill Alex by shooting him in the head. Fortunately, Alex was not killed by the gunshot wound. Alex is fully cooperating with SLED in their investigations into his shooting, his opioid use, and the search for the person (s) responsible for the murder of his wife and son. Alex isn’t faultless, but he’s just one of many whose lives have been devastated by opioid addiction.
